Breed Standards Committee
David Funk, Chairperson
Committee members:
Dar Addington, Rex Backus, Teresa Casselman, Rebecca Gantt, Brent Deitrich, Julie Einseidel, Tim Flickinger, Becky Goldthwaite, Bobbie Potopowitz, Karla Riekman, Barbara Rissler, Jane Robinett, Sandra Scott, and Nina Schafer

COMMITTEE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
A. Complete revision of Nubian Breed Standard to be presented in N&E.
B. Work on issues presented to us by the New Breeds Task Force relating to the Nigerian Dwarf and Sable Standards; bringing them into alignment with the established breeds.
C. Do any necessary rewrites to present consistent Breed Standards for both show and registration in all breeds. This in consultation with the various breed clubs. (as per board action, 2003)

2. SUMMARY OF WORK DONE THUS FAR THIS YEAR.
A. After much discussion voted 11-3, not to publish Nubian proposal as presented to us; a major deficiency seen by committee was the "pros and cons" segment. (voting to accept and publish as written, Flickinger, Goldthwaite, Potopowitz-all others against Chair not voting except to break ties.

B. Voted 9yes, 4no, that we should ask INBA to prepare a new proposal, and present it to us in time to act on it. (No, Casselman, Flickinger, Goldthwaite, Potopowitz; Not voting Scott; All others yes)

C. Rejected a proposal to use the proposal sent after writing or soliciting improved pros and cons, 4 yes, 6 no 1 abst 1 no vote, 1 yes and no on same ballot) -(Yes, Casselman, Goldthwaite, Flickinger, Potopowitz, abstain-Riekman, no vote Scott

D. Rejected proposal to prepare our own revision of the Nubian standard including pros and cons. yes 3 no 10 (yes, Casselman, Goldthwaite and Potopowitz; not voting Scott. All others no.

E. Those voting voted 13-0 (unanimously) not to both work on one ourselves AND ask INBA to prepare one.

F. Worked on correcting the wording of the Alpine made inaccurate with inclusion of Sables and Nigerian Dwarves.

G. Agreed to recommend revised wording to correct the above problem.

H. Voted 10 yes,2 no, 1 yes but needs greater change, 1 not voting to recommend that the board change the Alpine Standard in the Guidebook, substituting "The Alpine dairy goat is a medium to large size animal, alertly graceful, with erect ears, offering all colors and combinations of colors with distinction and individuality of appearance." for the present sentence which says "The Alpine dairy goat is a medium to large size animal, alertly graceful, AND THE ONLY BREED with upright ears that offers all colors and combinations of colors giving them distinction and individuality."

This action is permissible under B.5 (c) of the Bylaws, as part of the duties of this committee.

I. Received and passed for inclusion in ADGA News and Events a proposal from INBA to revise the Nubian breed standard, inserting the common term "Roman nose" explanatory to the term "convex". 12 yes, 1 no, 1 not voting - Julie Einseidel-no, Karly Riekman-vote not yet received, all others yes. Proposal below.

NUBIAN BREED STANDARD SURVEY - requested by INBA -Official Nubian Breed Club 1. Shall the Nubian Breed Standard, Section XVI BREED STANDARDS contained in the American Dairy Goat Association Guidebook be changed as follows:

CURRENT WORDING: "The head is the distinctive breed characteristic, with the facial profile between the eyes and the muzzle being strongly convex."

PROPOSED WORDING: "The head is the distinctive breed characteristic, with the facial profile between the eyes and the muzzle being strongly convex (Roman nose)."

PRO:
1. The purpose of the modification is to define and clarify 'strongly convex nose' with the more commonly understood term 'Roman nose'.
2. The terminology is used in the ADGA Breed Specifics for other breeds.
3. The term is commonly used by judges in the show ring, often to indicate an undesirable characteristic in a non-Nubian goat.
4. This is an important and highly desirable characteristic in the Nubian, and it is not unreasonable to emphasize or define it.
5. No change has been made to the meaning of any part of the breed standard. Wording has been added for emphasis and clarity, only.
6. This change of wording would not alter the requirements necessary for any goat to meet the Nubian Breed standard.

CON:
Nubian breeders understand the term "convex nose" so there is no need to define it further by adding the term "Roman nose" to the Breed Standard.

3. Problems encountered:
The biggest problem was with the computer I was using, which crashed repeatedly. Members of the committee responded well and usually promptly. Mary Clark did her best to keep me informed of progress at INBA. We do need clarification of the intent of the bylaws relative to the powers of this committee. As written, page 18, 2004, 5a & 5b which refer only to changes presented by clubs and groups of individuals. Such proposals require votes in the News and Events. 5c, 5d, and 5e refer specifically to actions taken by the committee on its own initiative, and give instructions as to procedure in those cases. Actions taken under those sections, such as the correction of the Alpine standard above are appropriately taken directly to the board. We may need to decide whether to leave 5c, 5d, and 5e as they are,(which I prefer) or to also require them to be subject to News and Events referendum before presentation to the board as a whole.

4. Decisions Requiring Board Action
We recommend the board change the Alpine Standard in the Guidebook, substituting "the Alpine dairy goat is a medium to large size animal, alertly graceful, with erect ears, offering all colors and combinations of colors with distinction and individuality of appearance." for the present sentence which says "The Alpine dairy goat is a medium to large size animal, alertly graceful, AND THE ONLY BREED with upright ears that offers all colors and combinations of colors giving them distinction and individuality."

This simply removes the statement that they alone have both erect ears and various colors, characteristics they in fact share with Sables and Nigerians.

5. WORK TO BE COMPLETED NEXT YEAR
A. Receiving results of "Roman nose" referendum.
B. There is strong possibility of proposals relating to Oberhasli and possibly Nigerian standards, as well as continuing discussion of other Nubian issues.
C. Such issues as assigned by the Board of Directors, the President, and the Executive Committee.

Respectfully Submitted
David W. Funk
