We have appreciated the patience of the ADGA membership while we have
worked
through and continue to work through the various issues relating to the
2007
Board action and discussion on buck collections. Often other tangents
come up when a project is started, and this has certainly been the case
with
this situation. ADGA staff, the Executive Committee and the related
committees of Artificial Insemination, Registration and DNA Typing have
been
involved in the immediate specific issues as well as working towards
policy
recommendations for Board consideration on a variety of related topics.
One
such example is, "what might be an acceptable alternative step when
information is incomplete or missing on straws".
To date we have received information from Superior Genetics (processor
code
118) on many bucks that were named on a list provided to the Board in
October, 2007. We anticipate the rest will arrive shortly. We
appreciate
the efforts of this processor as very few bucks on this list had a
collection form filed by the owners. Several others have had collection
forms on file from other processors. Several bucks with collection
forms on
file have had progeny successfully registered. Some on the list were
not
part of this issue. Only a few had a DNA type on file. In addition,
we
have subsequently been informed of other bucks collected by various
processors, including this processor that also do not have forms on file
and
were not listed. It would be a disservice to provide an incorrect or
incomplete listing as the list has changed frequently as information
becomes
available.
We have established a procedure to assist members with this issue. ADGA
members who need to resolve questions regarding semen they currently
have,
can email Performance Programs Coordinator, Lisa Shepard at
performanceprograms@adga.org . If email is not available, call
805-461-5547 (8-5 PST). Please provide your name and ADGA ID and the bucks
ADGA
registration ID and name. We can then assist you with the current
policy
and provide you with the following information:
1 - Whether one or more collection forms are on file
2 - Whether the collection falls between the 1991-2001 dates where a
single
form from any processor is all that is necessary
3 - Whether the collection falls prior to 1991 and no date is necessary
for
registration of offspring
4 - Whether there is no collection form on file but we have received
information that is being reviewed for Board consideration of acceptance
5 - Whether the collection is still being researched by the processor
6 - Whether the collection is not known to us but we can add it to the
project
It is the member's responsibility once this information is known, to
check
the straws for the information that would need to be placed on an AI
memo.
(see 2007 ADGA Guidebook, page 40, Section K.)
At this time, we would also like to suggest that all members involved in
the
purchase or marketing of semen use sound business practices. Owners or
sellers should provide the next owner or buyer with a Bill of Sale
identifying the semen and its collection information; the date of the
transaction; quantity involved; and source of such semen and whether a
collection form has been filed with the registry. Bills of Sale on
bucks
that have had semen collected could indicate that semen has been
retained or
sold by the seller. Proper written documentation for these individual
transactions would assist should problems arise and need to be resolved.
