Specific
Requirements for Housing Spotlight Sale Animals
Spotlight Sale animals may begin arriving on the Saturday before the Convention begins and may stay onsite until Sunday after the Sale.
Spotlight Sale animals must be housed in an area with 24-hour security and supervision. Ideally, housing should be on the site of the host facility. Although animals can been housed in nearby livestock pavilions or fairgrounds, the goal of the ADGA Spotlight Sale Committee (which must okay the site for housing Spotlight Sale animals) is easy access to the animals for all those attending the Convention—which usually means that animals should be housed on-site.
Wherever the animals are housed, there must be adequate shelter, ventilation but not drafts, good drainage, and access to water and electricity. Most Convention Host Committees find that either a large rental tent or the facility parking garage meets these requirements. Also important is ease of access for trucks and other vehicles since there will be daily delivery of feed and bedding and removal of bedding and manure. The Convention Host Committee is responsible for the expenses involved in housing and basic feeding (hay and water) of Spotlight Sale animals. Special feed and supplements are the responsibility of the animal’s consignor.
The Convention Host Committee also must provide 24-hour security and supervision of the Spotlight Sale animals from the time the first animal arrives until the last animal leaves.
Specific Housing Requirements:
The facility for housing the Spotlight Sale goats must be large enough to hold all of the pens required, store feed and bedding, allow room for promotional materials and ease of viewing. In the past a tent or facility no smaller than 3,000 square feet has met these requirements.
• Only Spotlight Sale goats may be housed in the Spotlight Sale housing facility.
• Each Spotlight Sale goat requires a separate pen at least 6 feet by 6 feet.
• Every pen should be a separate unit, not sharing any wall or side with any other pen.
• Buck pens must have covers, and doe pens must be high enough to keep does in or have a cover.
• Several quarantine pens should be provided, well away from the main pens, for goats that have not had their initial health checks or that are awaiting the arrival of the veterinarian for a specific health problem.
• Every pen must have adequate bedding, hay and grain feeders, and a water bucket.
• Every pen must be labeled with the animal’s lot number.
In the event of any questions or problems regarding the housing of Spotlight Sale animals, the Convention Host Committee will defer to the decisions of the ADGA Spotlight Sale Committee.
Finally, special permits or variances may be required to house goats on site at the host. A copy of the requirements for these permits or variances must be submitted with the “Proposal to Host an ADGA Annual Meeting and Convention. Once a "Proposal to Host" has been accepted by the Board, the Convention Host Committee should apply for these permits immediately.
