ADGA Linear Appraisal Program
Producing the ADGA Performance Pedigree!
Accurate performance records of production, visual trait assessments of type and pedigree are needed to develop a complete portrait of our individual animals in our herds. This portrait is the ADGA Performance Pedigree.
Accumulating data on pedigree, production, type and auxiliary traits from as many animals and herds as possible provides for accurate genetic evaluations.
Genetic improvement is permanent and cumulative, so it is a sustainable and cost-effective method of directing and stabilizing dairy goat performance according to each breeder’s goals. ADGA has a unique national agreement to provide evaluations.

DHIR, Linear Appraisal, Sire Summaries, Performance Reports, USDA-AIPL developed genetic evaluations & DNA verification are a form of quality assurance for the selection of breeding animals.
2024 Linear Appraisal
The sign-up form is available to be submitted or postmarked no later than January 31, 2024. 2024 Application. Late applications must be postmarked by April 15, 2024 and require an additional $75.00 fee. Please contact the office for more information on late applications.

Please understand ADGA does not schedule LA trips based on shows in each area, the appraisal schedule is very dynamic and cannot consider every show in the Country during trip planning.
Early applications will be billed to your account if you are attending a session in a state shaded in yellow on the coverage map. If you apply to host or transport to a session in a state that is shaded in grey your application will not be processed until ADGA can confirm a trip will happen in that area and your herd can be included.
Special Sessions
If you would like to request a Special Session, please use the “Special” option in the drop-down box of the stop type:
- Special Sessions are responsible for the full expense of the session including all Appraiser travel to and from your session.
- Special Sessions will not be granted to areas shaded in yellow during the months of May-September.
- Areas in grey can request a Special Session September-May but would only be granted if there is Appraiser availability.
- ADGA will work with you on a date range for Special sessions, but the Appraiser will be selected by ADGA.
There are less than 10 part time Appraisers who are tasked with evaluating 10,000 animals from 1000 herds each year. To achieve genetic evaluation accuracy, it is important Appraisers be rotated by regions each year. On the tentative LA map, the regions shaded in grey were either scored last year, multiple years in a row, or traditionally have less than 5 stops available to create a trip. If you border a state shaded in yellow, but reside in a gray shaded state, it’s possible your herd can still be included on a trip. Anyone interested in LA can apply and if your herd cannot be accommodated the LA application will be refunded to your account. Herds that applied in 2023 and could not be scheduled have already been refunded and a new application for 2024 must be made. Herds that were offered to be included on a trip in 2023 but declined or cancelled have forfeited the linear application fee and must reapply for 2024.
The basic rules for animals to be presented for appraisal:
- Does over 7 years old are not required to be presented.
- Does that have been appraised after their 5th birthday are not required.
- Does appraised in 2023 are optional for 2024.
- Any doe under 5 that has ever freshened is required to be presented.
- Bucks are optional but must be at least 12 months old.
- You can choose to option out an entire breed.
- You can present sire groups if you have at least 10 eligible daughters of one buck.

The ADGA linear appraisal system evaluates individual type traits that affect structural and functional durability in order to take full advantage of the potential for genetic improvement through selection. ADGA’s linear system:
- Evaluates each animal & trait individually
- Evaluates each trait from one observed biological extreme to the other
- Includes traits that have economic importance and are at a minimum, moderately heritable
- Applied uniformly
The linear appraisal system includes 13 primary traits, one secondary trait, a research trait as well as structural categories scored by the appraiser to evaluate functional conformation on mature does and bucks.
Producers have the information to make a more accurate selection of breeding stock than ever before. Because of this, the responsibility and the opportunity for breed improvement are directly upon breeders.
The seedstock breeder, hobbyist & the commercial producer can all benefit from selecting stock based on fact; not just guesswork as the “eye” sees it.
