Board Action Regarding Guernsey Breed

This evening the following resolution was passed effective immediately.  Below you will find background information and the recommendations approved from the Reproductive Technology Committee.

Due to the tight timeline, we feel it is important to those who are actively working towards improving the Guernsey Breed.

BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION : Due to programming delays and other limitations, there are a number of Guernsey bucks which have been collected without fully complying with the collection form and straw labeling requirements outlined in the Guidebook (Article VIII,Section M) due to a lack of an assigned registration number. There are also BGS-registered animals which were collected in the United States prior to the creation of the ADGA Guernsey Herd book in 2016. It is the opinion of this committee – with support from members of Registration committee – that it is in the best interest of the Guernsey breed to provide a means to use preserved genetics whenever possible, so long as reasonable measures are in place to confirm the veracity of those genetics in the progeny via individual DNA typing of the semen donor.

Approved Recommendation 1: Allow registration of progeny from Guernsey buck collections performed prior to January 1st, 2016 WITHOUT a collection form on file.  DNA shall be required to be on file in order to waive the collection form requirement; sire verification of said progeny is also a requirement before accepting any further generations for registry until June 30th, 2025.

Approved Recommendation 2: Allow registration of progeny from Guernsey buck collections performed on or after January 1st, 2016 through March 1, 2025 without requiring an ADGA registration number on the collection form (buck name, tattoo/EID, and collection date all still required). DNA shall be required to be on file in order to accept the”incomplete” collection form; sire verification of said progeny is also a requirement before accepting any further generations for the registry.

Note: the end date for this policy may be recommended for extension on an annual basis, if deemed necessary due to continued registration delays.
